Did You Know... Iowa State Women's Basketball Coach Bill Fennelly is a WPU Grad?
Current Iowa State University Women's Basketball Coach Bill Fennelly is an alumn and former assistant coach at William Penn University.
Fennelly, who graduated from Penn in 1979, was raised in Davenport, Iowa and received bachelors degrees in Business Management and Economics at Penn. After graduating, he was signed on as an assistant coach for the Lady Statesmen and was a part of there national championship season in 1980-81. He then went onto assist at Notre Dame and Fresno State before landing his first head coaching job at Toledo in 1988.
While at Toledo, Fennelly compiled a 166-53 record and earned three berths to the NCAA Tournament.
In 1995, he was hired as the head women's basketball coach at Iowa State University. During his time he has a record of 324-145, which also includes nine appearances in the NCAA tournament. His teams made it to the Sweet 16 twice (1999-00, 2000-01) and to the Elite 8 last year and also in 1999 after upsetting perennial powerhouse Connecticut.
Iowa State University has shown their confidence in Fennelly by signing him to a lifetime contract in 2007.
